30-10-2018

Training Options  Duration: 60 Minutes
Tuesday, October 30, 2018   |   10:00 AM PDT | 01:00 PM EDT

Overview: This session will provide specific and easy to implement strategies to help ALL

clinicians, not just pain management specialists. Pain management is more than "passing meds."

This session is not about different types of pain medications. Rather, it is about building a

relationship with the patient and together finding the best method of managing pain.

At times, healthcare professionals cannot completely remove all pain. However, even patients

experiencing some pain (that is tolerable) can still give high patient satisfaction scores.

Pain management is much more than managing the pain; it is also about managing the perceptions.

Choosing the right words is as important as choosing the right medications.

Why should you Attend: The inability to clearly understand all facets of pain management could

lead to disaster on many levels. Improper communication about pain could lead to patient

mismanagement and devastating consequences, including serious medical issues and death.

Healthcare organizations run the risk of legal and financial issues. Through gaining patient

trust and using proper educational tools, pain management can be achieved leading to

dramatically enhanced compliance.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services pain-related HCAHPS questions now focus

COMMUNICATION about pain. For example, one question is, "During this hospital stay, how often

did hospital staff talk with you about how much pain you had?" Patients given appropriate pain

medications still may give low patient satisfaction scores because healthcare professionals did

not effectively communicate. This session will provide the tools you need to communicate

effectively. This session offers strategies for BOTH hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients

who are dealing with pain management issues.

Through this content-rich and high-energy session you will learn how to communicate with

patients about their pain while simultaneously dramatically improving the patient experience.

Areas Covered in the Session:

Surefire methods of communicating with inpatients experiencing acute pain and outpatients

experiencing chronic pain
An effective three-step process to assess, plan and manage a patient's pain. The process can be

easily implemented to improve compliance
How to avoid patients from becoming angry and frustrated regarding their pain management. (Once

a patient's situation escalates to this level of emotional intensity, it will very difficult to

change their perceptions; prevention is the key!)
The commonly used "1-10 pain scale" is not enough; this session focuses on a more detailed, yet

simple to administer method
Communicating with patients about non-pharmaceutical methods of pain management. Also, the

session will cover how to effectively discuss blending the two types of management to increase

compliance
