Epigenetics: Regulation of Chromatin Structure in Development and Disease

  June 16, 2006

Keystone Symposia, Breckenridge, Colorado
April 11 - 16, 2007

Epigenetic regulatory mechanisms provide cells with transcriptional memory, allowing cells to stably maintain expression patterns for many divisions, and developmental flexibility, facilitating programmed alterations in gene expression during embryogenesis. Recent developments indicate that surprisingly dynamic modifications in chromatin structure are employed to regulate gene expression and have far-reaching consequences for cell fate decisions and normal and pathological development. Significant progress has been made in understanding the role of epigenetics in topics as diverse as cloning, cancer biology, genomic imprinting, development in plants and animals, and DNA repair. Similar molecules are employed by different organisms to affect chromatin structure and achieve epigenetic regulation. However the molecular mechanisms by which the changes in chromatin structure modulate gene expression remain mysterious. This Keystone Symposium on ‘Chromatin Structure in Development and Disease’ will bring together diverse fields, from basic studies in model organisms to medical research to biotechnology. The primary aim of the meeting will be to promote communication between diverse groups of epigenetic and chromatin researchers, facilitating cross dissemination of approaches to understanding these fascinating and medically important processes.
