Regulatory T Cells

  June 15, 2006

Keystone Symposia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
February 1 - 6, 2007

Although immune regulation by T suppressor cells was first proposed more than 30 years ago, recent studies in both man and experimental animals now provide a solid basis for the role of T cells in immune regulation. It is now widely accepted that the major T effector functions are mediated by two distinct subpopulations of T cells -- Th1 and Th2 -- cells which produce distinct cytokine profiles. In addition, both naturally occurring and adaptive T suppressor/regulatory T cells have been shown to play major roles in the control of all immune responses. This meeting will review the molecular basis for the differentiation of Th1/Th2 cells from naive precursors. The second goal is to present the most up to date information on the development, function, mechanism of action, and homeostasis of regulatory T cells. Modulation of both Th1/Th2 differentiation and regulatory T cell function are about to be translated to the clinic. Several presentations will address the approaches used and the results of preclincal and clinical trials involving manipulation of regulatory T cell function.
