INSTITUT PASTEUR, Paris, France
November 17-20, 2004
There has been a tremendously rapid development in our understanding of the mechanisms of interaction between pathogens and their target cells and tissues. However, less attention has been paid to the behaviour of pathogens within their respective eco-systems and the way in which this behaviour can be affected by prevalent conditions in these eco-systems. The aim of the Fifth Louis Pasteur Conference is to explore the most recent and promising developments concerning the role of ecosystems in modulating parameters that are essential in controlling the occurrence of infectious diseases. Particular attention will be given to the process of emergence of new pathogens, genome plasticity and the evolution of pathogenicity and resistance, and environmental regulation of virulent phenotypes. Presentations will also include models for fighting arthropod transmitted diseases, and the emerging paradigm on the interaction between commensal microrganisms and their hosts’ surfaces.
