Functional Genomics
As the pressure mounts to produce validated targets and reduce late-stage attrition, functional analysis and characterization of drug targets and disease pathways is becoming key in pharmaceutical research. Understanding the role of specific genes in disease requires a highly parallelized and multidisciplinary approach. Armed with more-powerful, higher-throughput tools for gene knock-out/knock-down, protein characterization, metabolic profiling, high-content screening, and data management, researchers are now in a position to acquire and integrate genomic, proteomic, metabolite, phenotype, and clinical data to provide a systems-wide view of biological function and disease pathways/mechanisms.

Chemical Genomics
Exploring biology with organic chemistry is changing the biological-chemical interface and involving the chemist much earlier in drug discovery. In the past, chemists made and optimized compounds against a pre-selected target. Now, with chemistry as a tool, they also help chose those targets. Chemical Biology offers the potential to enhance the drug discovery process and part of this success will be a result of integration of biology and chemistry. Recent months have seen a large increase in the number of pharmaceutical companies that have begun to adopt chemical biology and chemical genomic approaches and have signed several deals with biotech companies in this arena. Attend this conference to hear the emerging results.

Target Validation
CHI's Third Annual Target Validation conference will draw on the pharmaceutical thought-leaders to highlight strategies for target validation and prioritization, including disease model validation, high-throughput functional studies, molecular characterization of phenotype, and compound profiling.
