New Genetic Insights into Animal Models of Diabetes
  February 25, 2003

Genetics

The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine
June 17-21, 2003

This meeting will bring together an international community of investigators working to develop and utilize inbred strains of laboratory animals. The meeting objective is to gain a better understanding of the etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of Type 1 diabetes (T1D), Type 2 diabetes (T2D), and the complications common to both. Speakers have been selected to provide a balanced program, ranging from the theoretical and practical aspects of developing and using rodent models, to their validation, acceptance and distribution. One of the most important objectives of the meeting is to bring new models of diabetic complications to the attention of the diabetes research community and to facilitate distribution of such models.

Lessons from Animal Diabetes (LAD) Workshops started in 1982 in Jerusalem, convened by two pioneers in the usage of animal models of diabetes, Dr. Eleazar Shafrir and Albert Renold. The tradition continues in 2003 with this 9th convocation which will provide a unique opportunity for the international community of established investigators and investigators entering the field to interact and share the newest insights into animal models of diabetes.
