Genetics

  EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany
2003/06/19-2003/06/22

The scientific theme of this workshop is devoted to our current understanding of the organization of the eukaryotic genome within chromatin and the involvement of this organization in the regulation of various aspects of DNA metabolism (DNA transcription, replication, repair, recombination). Particular emphasis will be placed on the impact of chromatin on epigenetics.
In a post-genomic era, the importance of epigenetics has become increasingly apparent. Its definition is constantly evolving to encompass the many processes that cannot be accounted for by the simple genetic (DNA) code. In this context, the chromatin/ epigenetics interface has promoted intense research in recent years.

One of the most important actor in this field, Dr. Alan Wolffe, died tragically last year in May 2001. Alan Wolffe not only promoted research in the chromatin field, but also encouraged and inspired many scientists, among whom a number of group leaders in the world. He was born in the U.K. and always stimulated scientific interactions in Europe in order to build an active international chromatin community. The proposed workshop will gather representative members of this community to cover the most advanced discoveries in a field to which Alan Wolffe dedicated a contagious enthusiasm.

The total number of participants will be limited to 90. The meeting will start on the evening of Thursday, June 19, and finish on Sunday.
