This November, the American Medical Informatics Association will hold a very special Annual Symposium. Starting with the first Symposium on Computer Applications in Medical Care (SCAMC) held in 1976, this year marks the twenty-fifth consecutive Annual Symposium. It remains the world's premier conference on health informatics research, development, and application.

Whether this year's conference theme conjures up mental visions of ancient Greek poetry or of monoliths, AMIA 2001 will afford attendees the opportunity to engage in both an individual professional odyssey and a mutual journey through medical informatics accomplishments over the last quarter of a century. The 25th Annual Symposium will provide a venue to learn from the past and to envision the future role of medical informatics innovations in the discovery, creation, and application of biomedical knowledge; the delivery of health care in a wide variety of settings; and the health of the public.

Special sessions will showcase the history and possible futures in medical informatics practice, research, and training. Registrants will also have the opportunity to participate in presentations, theatre-style demonstrations, posters, workshops, tutorials, and the new format of case study poster presentations. AMIA is confident that this year's Annual Symposium will be the "place to be" for anyone involved in the use and management of information technology in health care. AMIA sincerely hopes you will join us in Washington, DC in November!
