HUM-MOLGEN events
Genome Sequencing & Biology

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory , Cold Spring Harbor, NY
May 10 - 14, 2000

Cold Spring Harbor is organizing the 13th Annual meeting on Genome Sequencing & Biology, which will begin at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, May 10, 2000 and run through lunch on Sunday, May 14. The past year has seen a new plan for the Human Genome Project with new strategies and directions for accelerated sequencing, as well as new applications of the sequence to basic and applied research problems in genetics, functional genomics and proteomics. The Mouse Genome Project is well underway and is encouraging a fresh perspective on approaches to the sequencing of diverse mammalian genomes in the next century. Furthermore, the complete sequences of two additional metazoan genomes, Drosophila melanogaster and Arabidopsis thaliana, will be completed and biologists who study molecular and genetic processes in multicellular organisms will be in the position that nematode biologists enjoyed when the first metazoan sequence, that of C. elegans, became available in late 1998. Lastly, agricultural genomics is making rapid advances and promises to add new dimensions to genome science, technology and applications.

The 2000 meeting will address DNA sequence variation (single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs) and its role in molecular evolution, population genetics and complex diseases, comparative genomics, large-scale studies of gene and protein expression and plant genomics. Both technologies and applications will be emphasized. In addition there will be a special session on the ethical, legal and social implications of genome research. Interactive demonstrations of computational genomics tools and new databases for SNPs and expression data will also form part of the program.
