New Jersey Medical Community Breaks New Ground With
Physicians Conference 2000

Looks To "Advance The Practice" During Three-Day May 5-7 Convention

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ (February 10, 2000) – In an unprecedented show of unity, physicians, 35 medical specialty societies and related organizations are joining together in Physicians Conference 2000: Advancing The Practice, to be held at the new Atlantic City Convention Center from May 5-7. This three-day conference – the first of its kind in the nation – is destined to advance the profession's stature in the state and provide unique opportunities to participants.

"This promises to be an event for everyone in healthcare — including medical office staff and future physicians — who is personally and professionally interested in advancing the practice of medicine," said Irving P. Ratner, MD, President, MSNJ. "The overriding goal of the Conference is to forge unity among physicians in order to effect the necessary changes for improved patient care and professional autonomy."

Coordinated by the Medical Society of New Jersey (MSNJ) and the Academy of Medicine of New Jersey (AMNJ), Physicians Conference 2000 is open to all licensed physicians, medical office staff, allied health professionals and physicians-in-training. Featured speakers include Rep. Greg Ganske (R-IA), a physician and leading advocate for patients' rights; New York Times Best Selling author Richard Preston; NBC Dateline medical correspondent Dr. Bob Arnot; and NJ Department of Health and Senior Services Commissioner Christine Grant.

"We need to stress that we are physicians and patient advocates first, and specialists second, to stop some of the fragmenting within the medical community," added John Sensakovic, MD, Ph.D., AMNJ president. "By speaking and acting with one voice at the Conference, we will increase the visibility and credibility of our profession."

The Conference will offer numerous educational, networking, social and political activities for the attendees, and will include a large Exhibit Hall with upwards of 200 companies eager to reach attendees with their innovative product and service offerings.

For the educational portion of the Conference, 17 CME credits will be available at no extra charge through more than 70 workshops and plenary sessions. Along with specialty-specific and clinical courses, there are sessions to address legal and business aspects of a medical practice. Among the workshops scheduled is critically acclaimed Physician on Trial, an enactment of the legal process of medical malpractice, with an emphasis on how to avoid it. In addition, a special Physicians Public Affairs Seminar will bring state legislative leaders and elected officials to the physicians to help establish New Jersey's medical agenda for the next year.

"In developing the Physicians Conference, we certainly want physicians and other attendees to take advantage of all the available personal and professional opportunities," said Dr. Ratner. "But more important, we want them to take an active role in a motivated medical community that is dedicated to improving the healthcare climate for patients and physicians alike."

The physician registration fee for the Conference is $199, with an early registration discount at $175. Other fees are set for office staff, allied health professionals and consultants. Medical students and residents will be admitted free. To register for the conference or for more information, contact the Medical Society of New Jersey at 609-896-1766.
