Selection of a large animal model is an important step in the evaluation of orthopaedic implants, tissue engineering, biological materials, and growth factors and their appropriate delivery systems before they can be approved for human clinical trials. It is sometimes difficult to do clinical research because often only advanced stages of a disease are available and no control group is obtainable. Therefore, appropriate animal models are critical to determine the efficacy of new agents and devices to enhance fracture repair or treat musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. This conference provides important information for both industry specialists and academic researchers who conduct orthopaedic research with rabbits, dogs, sheep, goats, and pigs and for those who are charged with designing appropriate animal models for orthopaedic devices, techniques, and pharmaceuticals. This conference will also cover a few small animal models that serve as proof of concept models to facilitate the next step into a large animal model. |
