RESEARCH INFORMATICS FOR DRUG DISCOVERY

Cambridge Healthtech Institute (CHI) , Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
November 22-23, 1999

The sheer quantities of compounds that drug developers must evaluate for therapeutic potential has created a unprecedented urgency for the development of complex information systems. In combination with the issues of data volume is the ever-increasing sophistication of the clinical evaluation process which requires researchers to access and manipulate data from a variety of sources. Creating a knowledge environment which allows for the interoperability between groups is the ultimate challenge for Pharmaceutical IT departments worldwide. Partnerships between end-users and their IT counterparts are essential to building information systems which afford the greatest possible universal utility. The current complexity of storing and manipulating data from such areas as: bioinformatics, high-throughput screening results, early ADME screens and large multivariate clinical trial data will be addressed in this conference. Parallels between the pharmaceutical industry’s needs and information management technology from existing industries such as banking will be explored. Additionally, the advantages and draw-backs of data standardization within companies as well as within the industry at large will be discussed. Both information "users" and IT professionals will find this conference informative and provocative.
