Applied Surfactant Science for Personal Care and Home Care Applications

  January 16, 2019

CfPA-The Center for Professional Advancement, New Brunswick, NJ or Virtually
June 27-28, 2019

Who Should Attend?

This course will be of interest and value to scientists, formulators, supervisors, and managers engaged in development, formulation, production, analytical characterization of personal care and home care products that require a good working knowledge of applied surfactant science. Job titles include, but are not limited to:
  • R&D
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Quality Assurance
  • Quality Control
  • Process Engineering
  • Formulation
  • Production

Course Description
This course relates primarily to developing the fundamental surfactant science principles required for successfully formulating and optimizing surfactant based personal care and home care products. In-depth understanding will be developed for the physico-chemical properties required to optimize key performance controlling criteria-emulsification, cleansing & foaming. Surfactant self-assembly processes and key microstructures such as wormlike micelles, lamellar gel phases etc will be discussed in depth with a view to building an understanding of microstructure-property-performance linkages. Optimization of surfactant based formulations will be discussed in context of facial cleansers, shampoos, conditioners, home care products etc. Practical case-study examples and an opportunity for attendees to use their newly-acquired knowledge in simulated situations will be included. One such area will be on Biosurfactants. The course will have a built-in workshop for participants to brainstorm around formulation challenges of novel sustainable alternatives such as biosurfactants and develop experimental programs to de-risk these by taking into account principles they have learned in the course.

Organized by: CfPA-The Center for Professional Advancement
Invited Speakers:
Samiul Amin, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, Manhattan College

Samiul Amin is currently Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Manhattan College. He also holds an Adjunct Associate Professorship at Long Island University, School of Pharmacy. Prior to joining academia in March 2018, Prof. Amin has worked in industry for the past 20 years working across Engineering, R&D and Innovation Management in global multinationals such as ExxonMobil, Unilever, L’Oreal and Malvern Instruments in Asia, Europe and the US. Prof. Amin’s expertise is in colloids & complex fluids, rheology, tribology, advanced characterization and formulation design of personal care, homecare and biopharmaceutical products. Prof. Amin’s research at Manhattan College is focused on formulation design and performance optimization of cosmetic and homecare products based on novel sustainable materials such as biosurfactants and biopolymers. Prof.Amin has significant number of scientific publications/patents/book chapters in the area of complex fluids, rheology and cosmetic and biopharmaceutical formulations. He has served on scientific committees of multiple national and international societies such as the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and has Chaired and Co-Chaired multiple International Conferences and Workshops.
