Developing Skin Care Products

  March 07, 2018
CfPA-The Center for Professional Advancement, New Brunswick, NJ
July 18-20, 2018

Who Should Attend?
The course is designed for individuals engaged in the personal care, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

It is intended for individuals who work in development and marketing of raw materials, delivery systems and finished products, including:
  • Research and Development
  • Technical Sales
  • Formulations Development
  • Marketing

Note: Professionals seeking an in-depth course in formulation techniques only may wish to consider alternative, more specialized courses offered by CfPA in that area.

Course Description
The selection of active ingredients for topically applied formulations requires scientific knowledge in physical-chemistry and biochemistry.

This 3-day intensive course is intended to help becoming familiar with the fundamentals of skin physiology, structure, renewal, aging process, UV response and the like, to identify those physiological steps, which are accessible to topically applied substances. Becoming familiar with these subjects will allow one to envision the possible interactions between a topically applied formulation and the skin as a viable organ. This can allow for optimization of products.

This course will provide participants with elements leading to the understanding that topically applied products can measurably, visibly and quickly affect the skin. To achieve this result a formula has to be “built” around the active to be delivered, by avoiding those ingredients, which might interfere with the proper delivery. Examples of different efficacy for the same ingredient in different formulas will be provided.
Organized by: CfPA-The Center for Professional Advancement
Invited Speakers:
Paolo Giacomoni, Ph.D.; Consultant to the Skin Care Industry, Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Elan Rose International

Dr. Paolo Giacomoni is co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Élan Rose International, a recently created skin care company in Tustin, California. He is also an independent consultant to the Skin Care industry.

He served as VP of Skin Care World Wide R&D with Herbalife, where he has been responsible for preparing new Skin Care lines, until December 2014. He is a quality-focused leader with over 20 years of experience in product research and development for cosmetic product providers.

Previously, Dr. Giacomoni was with Estée Lauder as their Executive Director of Research. During that time he was in charge of research and communications for Clinique and interacted frequently with beauty editors. He was also in charge of meeting with suppliers of raw materials and he understands from both sides, the negotiation process to enter a raw material in a skin care product. He contributed research on cell and surface biochemistry for best-selling products such as Youth Surge, Turnaround Concentrate, Anti-Gravity, UV-Response, Superdefense, Even Better, Laser Focus, and Repairwear Night/Day.

During his tenure at L’Oréal as Head of the Department of Biology and then as scientific attaché to the Director of Applied Research, he built a distinguished record of achievement through research on DNA damage and metabolic impairment induced by UV, and on the positive effects of antioxidants. His action lead to testing and integrating new technologies as part of the product development processes of best selling products such as Lancôme’s Rénergie and Primordial. While with L’ Oréal, he was a founder of the European Society for Photobiology and of the European Network for the Study of the Biology of Aging.

Dr. Giacomoni is fluent in French, Italian, German, Spanish and English and is the author of 100+ publications and patents representing breakthrough industry concepts. He received his Ph.D., in Biochemistry from Université Paris VI, Paris France; his Masters Degree in Atomic Physics from Università di Milano, Milano, Italy and had Post-Doctoral Training at Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, Heidelberg, Germany, at University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI and at University of California, San Diego, CA.
