Who Should Attend?
Individuals in the cosmetic/toiletries industry who seek to broaden their knowledge of development, evaluation and performance of a variety of products will find this course very beneficial.

Technical personnel in service and allied functions in the cosmetic/toiletries field who are not directly involved in product development but require a better understanding of the development process will also find this course of value. These would include:

  • Analytical Chemists
  • Safety and Regulatory Specialists
  • Process Engineers/Chemists
  • Microbiologists

Marketing personnel with sufficient technical background should also find this course helpful in their interactions with research and development.

Course Description
This course will review the methodologies used to develop the major types of cosmetic and toiletries products. Idea generation, formulation development, manufacturing considerations and stability testing will be discussed for each product type. The basis in the development of stable emulsions will also be discussed. Among the product types to be reviewed will be: creams, lotions, hair products (including shampoos, conditioners, waving products and grooming products), makeup products, shaving products, soaps and related washing products.

Particular attention will be given to critical problem areas which can affect the development process as well as the effects of specific ingredients on product performance, stability and product scale-up.

Invited Speakers:
John Carson; Principal, Carson Product Development

John Carson is the Principal of Carson Product Development, Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in the formulation of personal care products and the creation of new raw materials for personal care products. He has over thirty-five years experience with various personal care product companies such as Colgate Palmolive, Johnson & Johnson, Avon and L’Oreal. Before starting Carson Product Development, Inc. in 1999, he was the Technical Director for Croda, Inc.

Mr. Carson received a Bachelor of Science degree from Stevens Institute of Technology, a Masters of Science degree from Rutgers University and a Masters of Business degree from Monmouth University.

He has been an active member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists since 1970, holding several New York Chapter offices including the office of Chapter Chairman in 1990. Mr. Carson is the author of several articles on the properties of cosmetic raw materials and is listed as an inventor on fourteen US patents with several more in the works.

In addition to instructing for the Center for Professional Advancement, Mr. Carson is an instructor for the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, and in the Graduate School of Natural Sciences at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
