The Petrochemical Industry: Technology and Economics

  June 25, 2015

CfPA-The Center for Professional Advancement, Houston, TX
December 7-9, 2015

Who Should Attend?
This short course is especially designed for those who would benefit from a complete overview of petrochemical processing starting with a variety of different feedstock sources. The short course is also appropriate for those with limited to moderate petrochemical processing experience or those who are involved in supporting operations. In addition, operating personnel and engineering staff needing an overview of the entire petrochemical industry would find the course very valuable.

Job Titles/Functions Appropriate for the Seminar
  • Process, Project, Environmental and Plant Engineers
  • Operations Economic Evaluators
  • Commercial Development Analysts and Planning Engineers
  • Fuel Buyers and Oil Traders
  • Catalyst Manufacturers and Refinery Chemists
  • Product, Equipment, Chemicals, Supplies or Services Sales
    Personnel
  • Shale Gas Companies and Feedstock Suppliers

Course Description
This 3-day intensive course will present an overview of a modern, integrated petrochemical plant, including the feedstock properties, product slate, and the processes used to convert shale gas and liquid fuels into desirable products. Basic hydrocarbon chemistry, development of the stoichiometry and feed/product quality will be discussed, including changes to products resulting from a worldwide feedstock shift. The General Process Simulator in ASPENHYSYS will be used to illustrate shale gas or liquid fuel characteristics and the required processing into light olefins.

Seminar Highlights
Chemistry; physical properties, product quality, process chemistry, feedstock characterization and product yield, impact of environmental legislation; overview of the modern integrated petrochemical plant; unit operations, reaction, heat recovery and distillation

Organized by: CfPA-The Center for Professional Advancement
Invited Speakers:
Gennaro J. (Jerry) Maffia; Professor of Chemical Engineering, Manhattan College and Consultant to the Chemical Processing Industry

After twenty years as a process engineer and manager in the petrochemicals industry, mostly with Atlantic Richfield, Inc., Dr. Maffia is now Professor of Chemical Engineering at Manhattan College and is an active consultant in chemical and bio-based processes. Prof. Maffia has broad research interests in environmental, energy and biotechnology areas.

In addition to many recent seminars/webinars on natural gas mining and conversion, Prof. Maffia is currently working on a text for Wiley Publishers on this topic. He has offered short courses and seminars on process engineering and related topics at sites around the world on six continents. A frequent volunteer for a variety of community and outreach activities, Prof. Maffia established a student chapter of Engineers Without Borders at Widener University. He is now involved in service projects for potable water supply in Haiti, Kenya and the Philippines through Manhattan College. Recently, Prof. Maffia has reestablished the collagen research group at Manhattan College and has initiated research projects with NASA, L’Oreal, ARK and the USDA.

Prof. Maffia has undergraduate and graduate degrees from Manhattan College, an MBA from the Stern School at NYU and a doctorate from Dartmouth College.
