Description
The Human Genome Project (HGP), completed in 2003, was a 13-year project coordinated by the U.S National Institute of Health that identified the gene sequences of all of the approximately 20,000-25,000 human genes. The project provided sequences for over 3 billion chemical base pairs that comprise the human genome.

However, gene sequence is only a piece of the puzzle. Gene expression, how the genes are regulated (i.e. turned on or off), plays an integral role in translating the DNA code to biological characteristics, in health and in disease. Ongoing research is being carried out in all areas of health to better understand gene expression in response to specific conditions.

Over the past decade, great progress has been made in developing high throughput techniques to measure gene expression. Starting as high cost complicated lab procedures not too long ago, gene expression analysis is now an affordable and relatively standard procedure utilized in most academic and commercial laboratories. Gene expression methods are generating new information regarding the specific mechanisms that underlie complex biological processes and physiological conditions.

This 2 day accredited introductory course is tailored towards the use of gene expression studies and their utilization in the development of skin care products, both in the Pharmaceutical and Personal Care industries. In addition to a thorough description of the methodologies, applications for efficacy and safety endpoints will be discussed.

Organized by: CfPA - The Center for Professional Advancement
Invited Speakers: Nava Dayan, Ph.D.; Skin Care Research Expert

Dr. Dayan is a skin care and health expert with over 24 years of experience in a variety of skin research and developments aspects in the Personal Care, Cosmetics and the Pharmaceutical Industries. Expertise include product innovation, development of ingredients and formulations, skin delivery and delivery systems for dermal and transdermal applications, prevention of adverse effects, safety assessment (skin toxicology; in vitro methodologies), claim substantiation via clinical study design, execution and data interpretation. Major strengths and interests include: skin aging, skin inflammatory disorders, delivery systems for enlargement of therapeutic index, natural ingredients and formulations, skin’s innate immunity and barrier integrity, biochemical paths analysis, gene expression, skin research of toxicological endpoint and their assessment.

Anna Jelaso Langerveld, Ph.D.; President and CEO, Genemarkers LLC

Dr. Langerveld has more than ten years of experience with state-of-the-art genomics methods. The former director of the Western Michigan University Environmental Institute Genomics Facility (2000-2005), Dr. Langerveld played an instrumental role in carrying out Affymetrix and Taqman qRT-PCR analyses for neurobiological, environmental and animal health applications. Dr. Langerveld founded Genemarkers LLC in 2007 and conducts contract-based genomics research for a myriad of clients, ranging from small organic skin care companies and university researchers to large companies, such as Pfizer and NuSkin. Her gene expression work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, cited in the Wall Street Journal , and featured in Cosmetics & Toiletries (May, 2009) and GCI (June, 2010). Dr. Langerveld received her BA from SUNY Binghamton and her Ph.D. from the Interdisciplinary Program in Neurosciences at Tulane University (1998).
