The Human Variome Project, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Wednesday 5th December, 2012
A Satellite meeting of the Asia Pacific Society of Human Genetics' meeting.
Collection of genetic variation information from individual countries is becoming more and more important as we move further into the era of the personal genome. This work is now progressing with many countries forming a Node of the Human Variome Project. These nodes will be specific to each country and will collect information from clinics and laboratories within that country, this information will then be shared with others globally. Nodes could also be structured to provide the foundation of inherited disease registry. This session will look at how to establish a Node and what is happening in the Malaysian region, what still needs to be done and what can be planned for the future. The HVP Country Node Establishment Workshop, facilitated by the International Coordinating Office, will be an interactive forum where those hoping to establish an HVP Country Node in their own country or just interested in learning more about HVP Country Nodes can come together and discuss how best to achieve country-specific data collection. The workshop will focus on four key areas: defining the technical requirements of Node systems; proposing organisational structures to support Node technical capacity; gaining a broad overview of existing systems and solutions available for use; and identifying next steps in garnering political support at the national level for HVP Country Nodes. Delegates attending this workshop should expect to gain, through the discussions and exercises undertaken on the day, a solid understanding of what an HVP Country Node in their country would look like, the support and systems available to countries wishing to establish an HVP Country Node and the knowledge necessary to develop a plan of action for Node establishment. We plan to publish a statement relevant to the Malaysian region from the outcome of the meeting.
