Description
This 2-day intensive course provides the knowledge of how packaging for all types of pharmaceuticals (ethical, OTC, veterinary medicines) and other related products are developed, manufactured, tested, filled, transported, stored and used. Emphasis is placed on the characteristics of packaging materials which can influence the packed product; protection, compatibility, safety, compliance, design, performance on the filling and closing lines, as well as during distribution, marketing and use. Relevant physical and chemical properties of each type of material are detailed.

The importance of the processes used to manufacture, convert or prepare materials for use, on their specifications, performance and quality of the final packages is accentuated. Future and present trends in health-care packaging and the effect of counterfeiting on patients and the product manufacturer is examined from a worldwide perspective.

Exercises and discussions will give participants practice at developing solutions to, and prevent, problems that can occur in packaging.

Invited Speakers: Mervyn J. Frederick; Former Head of the Packaging Development Group, MSD-Organon (former N.V. Organon) The Netherlands

Mervyn J. Frederick - retired 2002 - is Former Head of the Packaging Development Group of Organon-MSD (former N.V. Organon) in the Netherlands, was responsible for the evaluation, prescribing and advising on packages and materials with respect to pharmaceutical, regulatory, production, marketing, and consumer requirements, and contributing to the development of unique presentations and devices world wide. He holds a number of patents. Earlier experiences at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, in London and Edinburgh, include pharmaceutical technology, analytical procedures and formulations.

He holds a Higher National Diploma in Chemistry (GB) and is a Fellow of the Institute of Packaging, (GB).

He is a consultant for professional training in Packaging, Validation, Material Distribution (Logistics), European Union Laws on Packaging and Packaging Waste. He serves as examiner for established institutions and performed committee work for the Netherlands Normalization Institute, German Industrial Standards (DIN) and the International Standards Organization.

He is dedicated to promoting packaging professionalism and improving packaging standards for the industry and consumer.
