  February 09, 2012

CfPA - The Center for Professional Advancement, 90 Minute Accredited Online Training
March 27, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (ET)

Who Should Attend
This online training will benefit professionals in the following industries:
Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Food, Cosmetics, Industrial, Consumer, Automotive and Electrical Electronics.

Potential job functions that would be interested:
Engineers, chemists, scientists, product or instrument designers, formulators, managers, technicians, marketers, and legal.

Departments interested would include:
R & D, Engineering, Manufacturing, Design, Regulatory, Legal, Sales and Marketing Operations

Description
This 90-minute accredited course offers broad based training that is designed to give the student a background in how to make decisions in plastics uses and selection. It answers the question as to what plastics can be used in a given application and how to perform a cost-benefit calculation on potential candidates. It will benefit professionals in the pharmaceutical, medical device, food, cosmetic, industrial, consumer, automotive, electrical electronics and other key industries. Participants will be given the tools to see how design, production processes, formulation, and polymer profiles all interplay in the selection of a good candidate material. Employees from many different industries should benefit from exposure to this course.

Review of Learning Objectives
Module 1:

  • What is an engineering thermoplastic?
  • What is the difference between crystalline and amorphous
    resins (nylon vs. polycarbonate)?
  • How do we characterize properties (physical, chemical,
    thermal, environmental)?
  • How do we modify properties for a given application
    (additives, minerals/glass, polymers)?
  • What processes are used to make typical parts used in
target industries (molding, extrusion, films, fibers)?

Module 2:
  • What is nylon and how do we use nylon in key industries?
  • What are various nylon type resins?
  • What is the property profile for nylon and its various filled
    and unfilled grades?
    – Physical; Thermal; Solvent, UV, oxidative and
environmental resistance; Long term properties (aging,
       creep)
  • What is type of applications are favored for nylon resins?
  • What applications are not suitable for nylon based resin?

Module 3:
  • What is polycarbonate and how do we use polycarbonate in
    key industries?
  • What are various polycarbonate type resins?
  • What is the property profile for polycarbonate and its
    various filled grades?
    – Physical; Thermal; Solvent, UV, oxidative
and environmental resistance; Long term properties
       (aging, creep)
  • What is type of applications are favored for polycarbonate?
  • What applications are not suitable for polycarbonate?
Question and Answer Session

Organized by: CfPA - The Center for Professional Advancement
Invited Speakers: Dr. Andrew Auerbach, Ph.D.

Andrew Auerbach has a career of over 35 years in the plastics and chemical industries and currently works for the Center for Engineered Polymeric Materials, sponsored by the Empire State (NYS) Development Corporation. He was previously a Development Associate for Celanese (formerly Hoechst Celanese) in the engineering plastics area. Dr. Auerbach previously worked for ITT as a group leader in the plastics/fibers area.

Dr. Auerbach has a Ph.D. in polymer chemistry, an MBA in marketing and is a registered patent agent in the US.

Dr. Arie Hochberg, Ph.D.

Arie Hochberg developed new grades of plastics for the automotive, electronic, medical and appliance industries. He specialized in flame retardancy, high impact, antistatic and other specialty technologies. He has worked for Celanese (formerly Hoechst Celanese) and LNP Engineering Plastic corporations.

Dr. Hochberg has a doctorate in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry from Columbia University.
