CfPA - The Center for Professional Advancement, 90 Minute Accredited Online Training
October 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (ET)
Who Should Attend This online course will benefit professionals working in the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Medical, Chemical and Polymer fields. It will appeal to doctors, pharmacists, chemists, formulators, polymer scientists, technicians and managers who work in the R&D, manufacturing, sales, marketing, regulatory, clinical, QA, logistical and strategic functions. Description This 90-minute accredited online training course is designed to give the student an introduction to the ways polymers are used to enhance the delivery of drugs, without delving into the way the drugs work. It describes how drugs are delivered orally and the different ways their release can be controlled or triggered by their immediate environment. It describes other delivery routes and how polymers are helping in wound healing, chemo and gene therapy. It describes the main types of polymers used to enhance drug delivery, assuming a basic understanding of polymer science.
Module 1: Introduction and Oral Delivery of Drugs: • Introduction to Polymers and Drug Delivery • The Oral Delivery of Drugs • Immediate Dosage Forms • Controlled Drug Release
Module 2: Parenteral Drug Delivery: • Transdermal Drug Delivery • Wound Dressings • Opthalmic Drug Delivery • Implants and Tissue Engineering • Triggered (Smart) Release Systems • Delivery of Drugs to the Brain
Module 3: Targeted Drug Delivery: • Micelles and Liposomes • Polymer-Drug Complexes • Chemotherapy • Gene Therapy • The Future

Peter Smallwood, Director of Chemical Associates, a UK based independent technical and training consultancy, serving the chemical polymer and allied industries worldwide.
Dr. Smallwood graduated from the University of Liverpool with a BSc and PhD in surface and colloid chemistry, and has over twenty years’ experience working with ICI and AstraZeneca. In ICI he worked in their basic research laboratory on surface chemistry and biocolloids before joining their PVC Group. In PVC he researched the polymerization and use of suspension PVC, before taking up an appointment as plant technical manager. Dr. Smallwood has published a number of papers, reviews and patents on the polymerization process.
At AstraZeneca he became technical manager for their vinyl acrylic range of emulsion copolymers. This involved all aspects of their manufacture and polymerization, as well as their use as paints and barrier coatings. In 1999 he directed the transfer of this technology to Japan.
Dr. Smallwood established Chemical Associates to undertake technical and techno-commercial studies and training for the chemical industry.
