Description
Online chemical process analysis is an evolving technology offering large potential savings in energy costs, reduction of offgrade production, efficient facilities employment, improved safety, and better quality. In addition, an in-situ analyzer in a pilot facility can help to tune processes and speed scaleup. On the other hand, the wrong analyzer or a problematic installation can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars with no gain. It is important that informed decisions be made on the purchase and installation of these instruments. This two-day course will provide an overview of some of the most important of the currently available technologies, how they compare, where they might be employed, example applications, and what is needed to achieve a successful installation. Calibration issues, spectral interpretations, and comparison with laboratory values, will be covered and examples given. Other types of analyzers, such as pH, moisture, physical property, inferential, acoustic, density and others will also be reviewed, but in less detail than chemical composition analyzers.

Invited Speakers: James F. Tatera; Sr. Process Analysis Consultant, Tatera & Associates

James F. Tatera’s online process analysis experience includes over 27 years with Dow Corning and over 10 years consulting and contracting through his own firm and others. This experience includes both US and International assignments in analytical research, process engineering, project engineering, production management, maintenance management, and consulting for users, vendors, and academia. He is one of the original Certified Specialists in Analytical Technology (CSAT), an ISA Fellow, an active member of the ISA and ACS, and an ANSI/USNC Technical Advisor to the IEC.

Lois G. Weyer, Ph.D.; Analytical Chemist with Alliant Techsystems (ATK) and Consultant with Trelytics, Inc.

Lois Weyer has worked in the chemical industry for over 30 years, primarily in spectroscopy and process analysis. She initiated the process analytical effort at Hercules Incorporated, and worked on installations of IR, near IR, Raman, UV, and other systems at a number of US and international plants. She earned a PhD from the University of Delaware in 1996, the EAS award for achievements in NIR in 1992 and the Delaware Valley Spectroscopist of the Year Award in 1999. Dr.Weyer is on the editorial board of the Journal of NIR Spectroscopy, and leads a process spectroscopy discussion group in the Delaware Valley.
