Description
This 90-minute accredited introductory course will provide a brief technical review of basic theoretical and design aspects related to cooling tower technologies. Particular emphasis shall be placed upon the following aspects: Definitions and basic principles of cooling towers; Process descriptions with schematic diagrams; Design parameters and considerations; Technical and economic feasibilities of water treatment schemes and concentration cycles; Water chemistry and microbiology related to cooling towers.

Module 1: Definitions and General Concepts
  • Basic concepts: Air humidity, packing material (fill), blow
down, drift, drift eliminators, water distribution system,
fans, leaching, noise, plume, fire hazards and tower
    stability
  • Cooling tower classification and types
  • Cooling tower components

Module 2: Theoretical and Design Aspects of Cooling Towers
  • Source and type of process water to be cooled
  • Principles of evaporative cooling
  • Wet bulb temperature, temperature approach and
    temperature range
  • Material and heat balances over the cooling tower
  • Design aspects related to sizing of cooling towers

Module 3: Water Treatment
  • Water chemistry with basic concepts related to water
    treatment
  • Concentration cycles
  • Biological considerations and required chemicals
  • Control of corrosion and scale formation
  • Water treatment schemes
  • Environmental considerations

Question and Answer Session

Organized by: CfPA - The Center for Professional Advancement
Invited Speakers: Dr. Malik L. Hami, Consultant to the Chemical processing Industry

Dr. Malik L. Hami is an Associate Professor of chemical engineering and a consultant chemical engineer. The holder of Ph.D., M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in chemical engineering from British universities, he worked in the petroleum industry for over 13 years prior to full time university appointment, mainly specializing in the fields of water engineering and pollution control. At the university he taught many subjects and conducted research related to water desalination, while, at the same time, maintaining his consultancy to industry in the field of water engineering.
