Essentials of Program, Project & Portfolio Management in Bio/Pharmaceutical Discovery

  June 29, 2010

The Center for Professional Innovation & Education, King of Prussia, PA
October 21 & 22, 2010

Who Should Attend

This two day course is designed to help team leaders in biotech, biopharmaceutical or pharmaceutical discovery enhance their project leadership skills, especially those who are new to team leadership.  Staff who want to enhance their understanding of the workings of program* or project teams in discovery, especially those who are in line to become a team leader should attend.  Line managers and portfolio managers needing to better understand how discovery project teams and discovery portfolio management operate effectively and how these functions can better serve the needs of senior management will also benefit.  The course can also help development project leaders and managers refine their matrix management skills.

*Project teams in discovery are often referred to as program teams.  We will use the generic term project here.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, attendees will have a clear understanding of how a discovery project team functions most effectively, including how the project leader optimally manages the team and how team members best support the goals of the discovery project.  Participants will appreciate the triangular relationship between line functions, project management and portfolio management.  Attendees will learn the significant differences between discovery project teams and development project teams, and project leaders will understand their projects in the context of the portfolio.  Additionally, participants will learn how portfolio management can best support informed executive decision making and portfolio strategy.  Attendees will learn how attrition, risk and value shape the portfolio, and how to assess the current level of project and portfolio management in their company and where improvements need to be made.

Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive overview and in-depth analysis of project leadership and portfolio management in the discovery phases of R&D in biotech, biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical companies.  The course presents an overview of how project leadership and portfolio management serve R&D management needs across industries as defined by the Project Management Institute.  This general model is then compared with current practice in Biopharmaceutical R&D.  Both project leaders and portfolio managers will learn about tools that support their work, typical challenges, and how to optimize their own performance.  Project leaders will learn how to enhance the performance of their team.  Portfolio managers will learn how to optimize the portfolio management function in their company.

Each session features attendee participation and experience sharing, so that participants can learn from each other's experience as well as from the instructor.

Attendees will receive a bibliography with informational and "how-to" books, as well as valuable on-line references.
