Sunlight Exposure to the Skin: Can We Shield the Bad and Enhance the Good?

  April 27, 2010

CfPA - The Center for Professional Advancement, 90 Minute Accredited Online Training
June 24, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (ET)

Who Should Attend
This course is designed for individuals in the pharmaceutical and personal care industry who are involved in the development of skin products for day exposure. It will be especially valuable to professionals in the areas of Research and Development and Sales and Marketing.

Description
Sunlight exposure on earth can be divided into five different wave lengths: UVC (100-280nm), UVB (280-315nm), UVA (315-400nm), visible range (or blue light, 400-700nm) and infrared (700nm-1mm). While the damage to the skin from specific wavelengths such as UVA and UVB was studied extensively, less attention is paid to the other wavelengths and their effects on skin. It is known for example that UV radiation contributes to generation of vitamin D, that UVC is germicidal and that infrared can benefit skin barrier properties. It was also recently shown that visible light contributes to the generation of free radicals in skin. Since we know that some sun exposure wavelengths can be beneficial while others are damaging, can we develop products to shield from the bad and allow/enhance exposure to the beneficial?

This 90-minute accredited training session will describe the known biochemical process occurring in skin attributed to the different wavelengths, their damage and benefits.

Module 1:
  • The sun spectrum and its intensity:
    – UVC
    – UVB
    – UVA
    – Blue light
    – Red light
  • Photo aging vs. chronological aging

Module 2:
  • Reactive oxygen species in biological tissues
  • Skin damage from UVB
  • Skin damage from UVA
  • Skin damage from blue light

Module 3:
  • Benefits of infra red exposure
  • Generation of vitamin D in skin
  • Benefits of UVC exposure
  • The psychological factor

Organized by: CfPA - The Center for Professional Advancement
Invited Speakers: Nava Dayan, Ph.D.; Skin Care Research Expert

Dr. Nava Dayan earned her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem specializing in skin delivery. She is currently an Associate Adjunct Professor in the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University, and the R&D Director at Lipo Chemicals Inc. During her 23 years of experience she has specialized in a variety of areas related to skin treatment:

  • The research and understanding of the interaction between topically applied compounds and
    the skin
  • Findings in skin biochemistry and especially the upper layer of the skin- the stratum
    corneum
  • Delivery of active compounds into and through the skin and the development of delivery
systems to facilitate transport, improve bio-availability and reduce toxicity
  • Design and development of topically applied formulations
  • Design of clinical studies to substantiate market claims and to assure safety
  • Academic teaching and lecturing
  • Industrial experience in both development of active compounds, delivery systems and
    finished formulations
  • Skin absorption studies in vivo and in vitro for safety/ efficacy assessment
  • In vitro methodologies for safety assessment of topically applied compounds

Dr. Dayan has received numerous awards of excellence for various papers she has authored. She is the author and coauthor of more than 100 publications including book chapters and was granted 7 patents. She is also the editor of the “Skin Aging Hand Book” published by Elsevier. Dr. Dayan is a member of the Dermatopharmaceutics Focus Group, and the Abstract Review Committee for the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). She is serves as the Educational Chair of the NYSCC Chapter and on the Scientific Advisory Board of Health Beauty America Expo. Dr. Dayan teaches at Rutgers University and is the Director of a variety of courses at the Center for Professional Advancement.
