Description
This 90-minute accredited online training course gives an overview of the use of polymers in medical devices. It describes the major applications in which polymers are used in health-care. The course will cover the properties of the polymer which make them useful, how the devices are fabricated, look at new developments in this area.

Module 1:
  • Introduction to the Course
  • Overview of key polymer types, their synthesis and 
    properties of importance
  • External medical devices (i.e. Tubing, containers, syringes,
    blood bags, gloves, etc)

Module 2:
  • Internal Medical Devices
    – Behaviour of polymers inside the body; their interaction 
       with blood, the immune system and other organs
    – Dialysis and Oxygenation of the blood (polymer 
       permeability)
    – Cardiovascular, the replacement of heart valves and 
       blood vessels
  • Wound dressings
  • Tissue engineering

Module 3:
  • Dental Polymers (UV curing)
  • Opthalmology, spectacles, contact lenses and IOLs 
    (Hydrogels)
  • Polymeric drug delivery systems
  • Polymeric drug delivery systems
  • Conclusions
  • New developments

Invited Speakers: Peter Smallwood, Director of Chemical Associates

Peter Smallwood, Director of Chemical Associates, a UK based independent technical and training consultancy, serving the chemical polymer and allied industries worldwide.

Dr. Smallwood graduated from the University of Liverpool with a BSc and PhD in surface and colloid chemistry, and has over twenty years’ experience working with ICI and AstraZeneca. In ICI he worked in their basic research laboratory on surface chemistry and biocolloids before joining their PVC Group. In PVC he researched the polymerization and use of suspension PVC, before taking up an appointment as plant technical manager. Dr. Smallwood has published a number of papers, reviews and patents on the polymerization process.

At AstraZeneca he became technical manager for their vinyl acrylic range of emulsion copolymers. This involved all aspects of their manufacture and polymerization, as well as their use as paints and barrier coatings. In 1999 he directed the transfer of this technology to Japan.

Dr. Smallwood established Chemical Associates to undertake technical and techno-commercial studies and training for the chemical industry.
