Description
This 90-minute accredited online training is a brief introduction covering the formulation and manufacturing of nutritional supplement tablets and capsules. The course is based on the theory and application of solid dosage and hard shell manufacturing using established formulation techniques. Various formulas will be established, and then evaluated using the criteria: will it work, be cost effective, give more rework than it's worth, satisfy the customer?

Module 1: The Basics and Overview
  • Introduction to the Nutritional supplement business
  • Understanding raw materials
  • Blender types
  • Basic table press operation
  • Encapsulator operation

Module 2: Successful Formulation and Production of Single Entity and Sustained/timed Release Formulas
  • Type of materials that are used
  • Special considerations to achieve a timed release profile
  • Bogus versus true timed release tablets
  • Successful formulas require study and execution

Module 3: Successful Formulation and Production of Chewable and Effervescent Formulas
  • Types of materials that are used
  • Chewable formulas are different than regular tablets and 
    require special materials
  • Effervescent tablets are demanding to produce
  • Most people worry about the bubbles but the issues have 
    nothing to do with bubbles

Invited Speakers: Fred A. Rowley, President, Solid Dosage Training, Inc.

Fred A. Rowley, is an internationally recognized expert in solid dosage, hard and soft gelatin capsule manufacturing and a pioneer in solid dosage training. Formerly he worked as plant manager, tablets and capsules for Weider Nutritional International, Vice President, Operations for Arnet Pharmaceuticals; and OROS Operations Manager for Alza Corporation. He received his B.S. Biochemistry degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. Mr. Rowley has also held senior manufacturing and technical services positions at Syntex Corporation (US and Puerto Rico), Shaklee Corporation and Stayner Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Rowley has published 22 peer reviewed articles and has written influential textbooks on all aspects of solid dosage and capsule manufacturing. He currently serves on the editorial advisory boards of both Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Tablets and Capsules magazines. He has taught in Europe, India, North America and Puerto Rico at both the University level and at major Pharmaceutical companies.
