Pathways to Skin Penetration

  November 20, 2007
The Center for Professional Advancement, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
10-11 April 2008

Who Should Attend
This overview is intended for individuals who are interested in expanding their knowledge and understanding in recent findings about the skin as a barrier, possible ways of interaction between the skin and applied compounds and patterns and pathways for penetration into and through the skin. Attendees may hold a function in the following areas:
  • Skin research and development
  • Formulation chemistry
  • Toxicology and regulatory affairs
  • Technical sales and marketing
  • Design and development of topically applied formulations

This two-day course is tailored for individuals who want to gain better understanding in the detailed structure of the skin and the correlation between structure and penetration. Participants will be introduced to the biochemistry of the upper layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, and the different theories about pathways of penetration through it.

The course will provide tools for understanding the limitations in penetration and will suggest possible ways to overcome the skin barrier. It will discuss testing models as well as considerations to be taken such as skin age and condition.

Organized by: The Center for Professional Advancement
Invited Speakers: Nava Dayan, Ph.D.; Skin Care Research Expert

Dr. Nava Dayan holds a bachelor degree in pharmaceutics, masters in both pharmaceutics and pharmacology and Ph.D. in pharmaceutics specializing in skin delivery systems. In her 20 years career in research and development of topically applied formulations and skin care, Dr. Dayan has specialized in many areas of research including:
  • the interaction between topically applied compounds and the skin;
  • innovation in the development of active compounds,
  • delivery systems and finished formulations for skin treatment;
  • delivery of active compounds into and through the skin;
  • in vitro and in vivo testing for skin permeation and metabolism;
  • the design of studies to substantiate market claims
Dr. Dayan established a network of research institutions and is active in the following organizations to promote collaboration between the industry and the academia: American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and Controlled Release Society (CD&P, CRS). She is an active member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and the organizer and moderator of the scientific program of the Annual Cosmeceuticals Summit and on the scientific advisory board of the HBA Global Expo.
