Industrial Membrane Separations

  July 09, 2007

The Center for Professional Advancement, Amsterdam
24-26 September 2007

Who Should Attend:
This course is intended for industrial process engineers and chemists, as well as managerial, marketing, and academic persons interested in understanding these modern separation techniques and their broad applications across a number of industries.

These industries include but are not limited to:
Food
Biopharmaceuticals
Paints
Pharmaceuticals
Pulp & Paper
Electronics

Description:
The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the technology of membrane separations on an industrial scale. It covers the physico-chemical principles involved and equips you to select and evaluate membranes/modules, and to optimize process performance.

A broad range of applications is covered to demonstrate the versatility of membranes in purification, sterilization, concentration, desalting, fractionation, and recovery of valuable products. Where possible, economic comparisons are made with competing processes. In addition, some promising new applications now under development are discussed.

The first day is devoted to microfiltration except for the last lecture on ultrafiltration; the fundamentals for all membrane processes are covered on that day. The second day focuses on ultrafiltration, and the third day on reverse osmosis, gas separations, and pervaporation. The fourth day focuses on electrodialysis—the membranes, processes, equipment design, economics and applications.
