Ethical Issues in International Health Research

  March 15, 2007

The Program on Ethical Issues in International Health Research, Harvard School of Public Health, 665 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02115
June 11-15, 2007

Conducting research in developing countries illuminates ethical issues that reflect differences in cultures, politics, wealth, standards of care, individual and group rights, and priorities. Present ethical codes are not always sufficient for the broad set of problems faced by funders of international health research, members of ethical review boards, government agencies, and researchers themselves.

This interactive, intensive short-course draws on the talents of leaders in the field to address current issues and anticipate potential future problems in international health research. The course allows participants from developing and industrialized countries to compare experiences, receive expert advice, and voice their concerns in five days of lectures, case studies, and panel discussions. As current guidelines are subject to interpretation and likely to create conflict, candid comments, questions, and open critique of materials is encouraged.

This workshop is intended for individuals involved in all areas of international health research, including medicine, anthropology, epidemiology, education, journalism, political science and law, government, foundations, industry officials with funding responsibilities, and members of institutional and governmental review boards.

Ethical Guidelines for Research Involving Human Subjects
