In April 2006, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the selection of SNOMED CT as one of the terminologies of choice for the highlights section of the Structured Product Labeling (SPL). The choice of SNOMED CT was made to facilitate a one-to-one mapping between concepts and codes commonly used in electronic health records and the same concepts and codes used in the electronic prescribing information found in the SPL’s highlights section.
