  June 05, 2003

Biotechnology

University of Bristol, School of Biological Sciences, University of Bristol
15th-19th September 2003

Content: An innovative 5-day practical course for researchers, with the focus on hands-on laboratory workshops backed up by practical demonstrations, seminars, problem-solving sessions and case studies.

Aims: To teach scientists how to produce SSR’s from their own source DNA, and to provide them with information about the applications of SSR’s, and where to go next

Course content

Days 1-3: Practical lab sessions interspersed with short lectures on the procedures being used, and the theory behind them

Day 4: Information will be provided on how to take the material forward (e.g. growing, sequencing and designing primers), how to make use of service providers, data analysis, and a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of using microsatellites

Day 5: Participants will complete the practical procedures to obtain their SSR’s. This will be followed with a discussion of results with experts in the field

The course director, Prof. Keith Edwards, is recognised as an international leader in the field of SSR production and utilisation.

Participants will leave this course with their own SSR enriched libraries, having completed all of the technical processes themselves
