Biotechnology

Penn State University, State College, Pennsylvania
May 12-16, 2003, September 22-26, 2003, October 20-24, 2003

Separation and Purification Strategies for Biotechnology Products helps participants understand and develop strategies for separating and purifying proteins, recombinant DNA products, and monoclonal antibodies. Hands-on exercises include pilot scale laboratory experiments with cell disruption, centrifugation, membrane filtration, chromatography techniques utilizing AKTA Explorer, and column packing. The exercises allow participants to integrate theory with practice and to understand practical issues in purification of biotechnology products. Lectures provide background that help participants understand the theory and principles of bioseparations.

The laboratory work will be supported by presentations and discussions on the fundamentals of microbial culture, aseptic techniques, kinetics of fermentation, recombinant microorganisms, scale-up strategies, downstream processing, economic considerations, regulatory aspects, and cGMP.
