From Gene to Protein: a practical approach to the understanding of the concepts used in molecular biology | ||||||||||||||||
August 16, 2002 | ||||||||||||||||
Oxford University, Oxford, UK 10 - 12 September 2002 Molecular biology has undergone a revolution during the last decade witnessing the birth of new powerful scientific disciplines such as genomics and proteomics. Genetic material (DNA) encodes information to make proteins that are essential for life. Proteins are found all around us: as enzymes, as antibodies; and as the structural scaffolding for cells. It is essential to understand the composition of DNA and the procedures by which genes are detected, isolated, and manipulated if one is to understand how proteins are made and function. This course aims to establish these practical foundations of molecular biology by introducing some of the procedures available to the molecular biologist. This course will be taught through a combination of lectures and practical sessions. |
