9.30 – 9.50 Introduction
Rhona Allison, Bioinformatics Network Leader, Scottish Enterprise
 Setting the Scene
 Scottish Activity
 Forum and Objectives

9.50 – 10.35 Bioinformatics for Biotechnology – Revolutionising the R&D Process?
Keynote Address – Professor Sir David Lane, Chief Scientific Officer, Cyclacel
What is Bioinformatics and what benefits can a company expect by employing Bioninformatics solutions and tools/techniques to their discovery and development processes? This presentation will review the benefits and opportunities available to companies from effective use of Bioinformatics and will address how Bioinformatics tools can be embedded into the R&D process.

10.35 – 11.05 Bioinformatics Interactions – Where to find out more?
Graham Cameron, Associate Director, European Bioinformatics Institute
This session will look at the scope of Bioinformatics; areas where the techniques are being most extensively used and where companies and individuals can go to get more information. This presentation will also identify the areas of significant involvement in the global market place.

11.30 – 12.00 Intellectual Property Issues
IP issues are very important in the R&D environment. What new dimensions do Bioinformatics introduce? What practical measures should a company take to protect themselves with regards to IP? Indeed, what level is really necessary?

12.00 – 12.30 Grid Network – Vision of the Future
Professor Malcolm Atkinson, E-Science Centre
What infrastructure is needed to facilitate the growth of the use of Bioinformatics tools? What does a company need in-house to incorporate the use of such tools? Why is a National Grid needed? An overview will be given of the project & its importance for all Bioinformatics end-users.

14.00 – 14.30 Bioinformatics & Biotechnology – Working as Partners in the R&D Process?
Dr. Alex Lainson - Moredun Research Institute
A case study looking at how Bioinformatics can work effectively within the discovery and R&D process. The marriage between the Biologist’s need to interrogate and organise the data and the Bioinformatician who has the tools to do so.

14.30 – 16.45 Globally-Renowned Scottish Organisations Providing Cutting Edge, Fully Customised Bioinformatics Expertise and Services to the Biotechnology Sector
Scotland has a global reputation for the quality of research conducted and the high calibre of researchers, both produced and working in Scotland. Furthermore, Scotland is emerging as a strong global player within the fields of Biotechnolgy and Bioinformatics. This section will spotlight some of these Bioinformatics centres and look at the capacity, services, capability and expertise available, together with their interaction with the Biotechnology community. Organisations include:
GTI – Professor Peter Ghazal. The Scottish Centre of Genomic Technology and Informatics (GTI) is a world class centre for multi-disciplinary research in post-genomics. Present aims and activities of the centre foster a collaborative approach to microscale high through-put technologies with a rapidly expanding Bioinformatics/statistical grouping and development of a high end relational database tailored to microarray and genomic data.
CRC Beatson – Professor Keith Vass. The Beatson Institute is Scotland’s premier cancer research institute and is funded mainly by the Cancer Research Campaign. The institute investigates the causes and molecular mechanisms of cancer with the aim of improving detection, diagnosis and treatment.
