11-12 June 2001

At the beginning of the 20th century not a single disease was understood at the molecular level. As the century draws to a close, illnesses ranging from cancer to mental illness, and from cardiovascular disease to infectious disease, are now increasingly understood in terms of specific genes and proteins that malfunction.

In this course we will consider several diseases each of which represents an important area of molecular medicine - AIDS which is an infectious disease rampant in the 20th century, cardiovascular disease which develops in response to somewhat inevitable problems associated with lipid metabolism and which ultimately leads to heart attack and stroke, Alzheimer's Disease which results from the death of neurons involved in memory, Schizophrenia a neurological disease which reflects a neurotransmitter imbalance, and cancer where a series of mutations arise in a single body cell that disrupt key genes that control cell division and cell territoriality.

This course is designed to offer a self-contained discussion of the principles of biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology that are essential to understanding the aetiology and molecular physiology of these diseases. This accomplished, it will be possible to consider the rationale underlying the current methods of therapy, some of which are as effective as they are elegant.
