Receptors play a crucial role in cell function, in particular in the cellular response to the environment. In complex organisms there is an amazing range and diversity of receptors. Study of these receptors and how they function has become vital to our understanding of cell function. The aim of this course is to give an overview of some of the major families of receptor which are found in mammals and use specific examples to illustrate the recent advances in our understanding of how these receptors function. The importance of both structural and functional information will be discussed and integrated to give an appreciation of the current understanding of receptor function. This course is designed for those who have a basic knowledge of molecular and cell biology and who wish to be brought up-to-date with more recent advances and to increase their breadth of knowledge regarding receptor function.
