  Introduction to Molecular Pharmacology
  February 07, 2001

Biochemistry / Immunology

CPD Centre, University of Oxford, Oxford
19 - 20 March 2001

Pharmacology, the study of how chemicals interact with biological systems and in particular the actions of drugs in the body, is a subject of great human and commercial importance. Knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of drug action contributes not only to our understanding of basic biological processes but also to the development of therapeutic agents to modify these processes in disease. This course will introduce the often confusing pharmacological terminology and give a clear picture of our current understanding of drug-receptor actions at the molecular and cellular levels.

In this two-day course we shall discuss the principles of drug action at the molecular level. The primary emphases of the course are the interactions of drugs with their target receptors, the molecular consequences of these events leading to modification of cellular behaviour, and the means by which these processes are studied.
