Description:

Company profile

Sistemas Genómicos is a firm dedicated to research in DNA and RNA genetic codes. Its mission is to provide society with a genetic research service.

We also collaborate in various customised R&D projects. Our aim is to offer this new research to industry and to society.

The firm’s commitment with research has enabled it to become the largest private organisation which offers DNA and RNA analyses in Spain, and the only firm that has participated in international genome sequencing projects. This commitment is shared among 60 professionals with recognised experience in the Molecular Biology and Genetics field.

In 1998, Sistemas Genómicos was created. The first Spanish firm, and one of the first in Europe, to specialise in DNA sequencing. Since then, its whole activity has centred on improving on a daily basis. It is all effort and passion for science.

Very soon, the first fruits of this effort were seen. After only two years since its creation, the firm made history by participating in the first DNA sequencing of a plant organism: the Arabidopsis thaliana plant. This milestone permitted the firm to invest in better large-scale DNA sequencing technologies.

From 2000 to 2003, Sistemas Genómicos opened up its field of action in the Agrofood sector. So it was that it centres on analyzing transgenic foods and on offering its genetic food authentication service known as AutentiGen®. This service enabled the firm to once again write a page in the history of Spanish science as it became the first Spanish laboratory dedicated to analysing genetically modified organisms.

In 2003, the firm took a firm commitment in progress and research, opened its biomedical division, and addressed its studies to diagnose genetic diseases and to apply them to reproductive medicine. This was a significant advance in the prevention of hereditary diseases.

In 2005, the firm absorbed the whole of the Institut de Genética Mèdica i Molecular (IGEM – Institute of Medical and Molecular Genetics), specialized in medical genetics and prenatal diagnoses. In the same year, it participated in another milestone: the International Tomato Sequencing Project. This was the largest contribution to sequencing genomes done in our country.

In its eagerness to innovate and invest in new technologies, the firm acquired an ultrasequencing platform. So in 2008, it became the Official Service Provider in Europe of this kind of services.

In 2010, it opened the Sistemas Genómicos Foundation.

Nowadays, Sistemas Genómicos occupies the leading position in DNA and RNA analyses in Spain and has the capability of successfully taking international genome sequencing projects.

Activity
The Company develops and commercialises services, products and customized R&D projects, focusing its activity in the areas of Agrifood, Biomedicine and Genome Research.

Our Agrifood Division is the first laboratory in Spain dedicated to genetically modified food analysis by means of genome technology, being one the worldwide leaders applying this technology in the field of Food Safety. The laboratory has met the analytical needs of the Agrifood Industry, as a consequence of the introduction of genetically modified organisms in the food chain. The aim here is to provide industry with the tools it needs in food safety matters. For this purpose, this unit has the best professionals and the most suitable technology. Some characteristics shared by all our products and services are: all the analyses are done following quality criteria with accreditation as regards international standards like ISO 17025 for the assays included in the technical annexe currently in force (Accreditation no.313/LE646).Our personnel in charge of all the analysis and all the products, and is highly qualified and specialised. Our laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

The Human Health Division of Sistemas Genomicos has developed a wide range of molecular genetic testing services. We are able to test genetic pathologies such as hereditary cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, we have developed technologies of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) aiming at the avoidance of genetic disease in couples at risk. Sistemas Genómicos’ Biomedicine Area is formed by the Medical Genetics and the Reproductive Genetics Units, with more than 30 perfectly specialised professionals.

The company has established a research and development program in rare diseases. These tests are crucial for the correct diagnosis of affected patients. Our laboratory contributes to the international harmonization of genetic testing methods and collaborates with the European Molecular Genetics Quality Network (EMQN).

Our Genome Research Division has contributed to the International Arabidopsis Genome Sequencing Project as a landmark of Genome Research in Spain. The results of our work in genome sequencing projects have been published in the prestigious Nature scientific journal. At the moment, our company is involved in several plant and pathogen genome research projects being the reference laboratory for genome sequencing in Spain.

Bioinformatics is an emerging and relatively new discipline which includes very different sciences like Biology, Computer Sciences, Statistics or Mathematics. Bioinformatics emerged as a response to the exponential increase in the volume of the data generated by the scientific community in the last decade, brought about by the development of new high-performance technologies such as microarrays or massive sequencing.Processing a growing volume of data is a highly complex task. Hence, it is necessary to develop new bioinformatics solutions to help transform raw data into biological data. In this way, our knowledge of the molecular processes involved will increase. Devising a defined, detailed and experimentally validated working plan is a long, complex process which entails highly qualified staff.Sistemas Genómicos (SG) has formed a multidisciplinary group of experts in Bioinformatics who are specialised in analysing the data obtained from high-performance platforms. The Bioinformatics Department offers the following services: massive sequencing data analysis, microarrays expression data analysis, hosting services and consultancy services.

R&D+i Projects: We have the acknowledged capacity to collaborate with international teams to match any development in the genome and transcriptome research field. We can include all the research stages in the process, from constructing libraries to bioinformatics and identifying individual genes.

High technology
A special strength of our company is the extensive experience in handling DNA samples from different sources for various applications of molecular analysis as well as our proven Quality Management.

We use the most advanced technology aswell as well established methos of diagnosis and our professionals recomends the use of either depending on the situation.

We are very flexible to select the technology that can help in each case.

We offer techniqs that vary from cariotyping to next genration sequencing, and in all cases we have available the best trechnology in the market.

We have at our disposal techniques such as Hiseq, Solid 55000, Miseq, 454 Junior, etc. So we can use the most appropiate one depending on the case.

Quality Assurance
Our laboratories are internationally recognized through proficiency studies and external quality assurance schemes organized by several international organizations such as the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, the US Department of Agriculture and the European Molecular Genetics Quality Network. Our laboratories are regularly audited by our industrial partners. We also have the ISO 17025 accreditation and the ISO 9001 certification.

Our company is accredited by ENAC for GMO (genetically modified organisms) and we have been selected by the Spanish Ministry to do specific analysis for agrofood.

We are the only european company accredited in PGD with rule 15789.

We do interlaboratoy round and we are constinusly in the top positions.
