Claim Substantiation for Clinical Studies of Cosmetic Products

  November 12, 2009

The Center for Professional Advancement, 90 Minute Accredited Online Training
January 12, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (ET)

Who Should Attend
This course is intended for professionals in the cosmetic and personal care industry. It will be especially beneficial to those in the following fields:

  • Formulations
  • Clinical testing
  • Product design
  • Marketing
  • Regulatory

Description
The FDA and the FTC are carefully watching cosmetic products for non-substantiated misleading claims. If in fact the claim is misleading and drives the customer to a purchase that will not deliver on its promise, this is indeed an ethical matter. With the cosmetic industry striving to produce safer products, it should also further stream its scientific resources towards better testing products for their activity on the skin and provide fair translation into claims.

The scope for this 90-minute accredited course is not regulatory or marketing but scientific. It is designed to address key issues in testing cosmetic ingredients and formulations. It will review a few of the misleading approaches and offer improved alternative approaches.

Module 1:
  • Cosmetic vs. physiological claims
  • FDA requirement for “substantial evidence”
  • Translation of data into fair claims
  • When does the skin undergo “structural changes”?
  • Skin aging
  • Skin moisturization and hydration
  • Addressing skin disorders

Module 2: Study Design:
  • Panel size and statistical significance
  • Validity of pilot runs
  • Subjective vs. quantitative evaluation
  • Consumer feedback and questionnaire
  • Activity of raw materials vs. finished formulations
  • Duration of activity

Module 3: Validity of In Vitro Studies Claims:
  • Skin penetration
  • Skin metabolism
  • Stability
  • Site of activity
  • Summary

Question and Answer Session

systems to facilitate transport, improve bio-availability and reduce toxicity
  • Design and development of topically applied formulations
  • Design of clinical studies to substantiate market claims and to assure safety
  • Academic teaching and lecturing
  • Industrial experience in both development of active compounds, delivery systems
    and finished formulations
