Who Should Attend

This two-day course is designed for engineers, scientists, inventors, entrepreneurs, managers and supervisors interested in learning more about the various types of intellectual property, especially patents. You should also attend if you are interested in learning how to recognize, protect and exploit intellectual property both in the U.S. and abroad.


Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, attendees will have a clear understanding of intellectual property terminology as well as the nature and extent of intellectual property rights.  Attendees will also gain the background knowledge necessary for taking the appropriate steps to protect the various types of intellectual property.  With regard to patents, attendees will acquire a basic understanding of patent concepts, patentability requirements, the types and parts of a patent application, drafting a patent application, and the process of obtaining worldwide patent protection.

This course also discusses patent litigation and the role of the United States Patent and Trademark Office and federal courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.


Course Description

Intellectual property plays a significant role in all aspects of science and engineering as evidenced by the intellectual property market which continues to grow at a remarkable rate.  With regard to patents, the rules for applying and qualifying for patent protection are changing as quickly as the technology they protect advances.  Now, more than ever, scientists, engineers, managers and the like must understand their companies’ intellectual property assets and their alternatives for realizing a significant return on investment for these valuable assets.  Moreover, global markets require an understanding of how intellectual property can be protected and exploited worldwide.
