COURSE DESCRIPTION: The European Genetics Foundation ( www.eurogene.org ) and the Consortium Progen ( www.consorzioprogen.it ) organize for the Fall of 2008 a course devoted to the training of officers for the peer-review system. The aim of this first course is to provide a platform of information/discussion on the themes related to the financing of research from public and private granting agencies. The course will be managed by the European School of Genetic Medicine ( www.progettobologna.it ) and will take place in Ronzano, Bologna in the Fall of 2008 (proposed dates: Arrival Friday November 7 evening - Departure Tuesday afternoon November 11) and will be opened to a maximum of 70 students. The collaboration of other academic and private Institutions is being sought. The programme will be focused on the operational model adopted by different European and American granting agencies to implement the peer-review system. This operational model is based essentially on 3 common features: a) officers; b) panel of scientists discussing the research applications in plenary session; c) at least 2 external international reviewers. The course will be aimed at officers and prospective officers at the European level Actions to promote fund-raising and to obtain fellowships for this course will organized by the European Genetics Foundation.
The Telethon staff will represent the backbone of this course especially for the demonstration in workshop sessions of the operational system which it has developed for the management of peer review.
