Natural Ingredients in Formulating Skin Care Products

  July 21, 2008

The Center for Professional Advancement, 90 Minute Accredited Online Training
December 4, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (EST–New York time)

Who Should Attend
Individuals from the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries who are involved in the following areas related to development of skin care formulations will find this training very valuable:

  • Formulation Chemists
  • Regulatory
  • Research and Development
  • Business and Strategic Planning
  • Marketing and Sales

Description
This 90-minute accredited training will offer the most updated status of the use of natural compounds in cosmetic and personal care products. Their source, processing, safety and efficacy, stability and formulations aspects will be discussed. The Natural Products Association (NPA) in the US suggests that only 20% of natural personal care products are truly natural. This gap is explained by the existence of several competing standards regarding the definition of “naturals,” “green” or “organic” in personal care products. There is confusion with the perception of “natural as safe”. Those compounds that have been used in the industry for many years for which complete toxicological profiles were generated are now attacked for bad publicity and are perceived as “non-safe and non-natural”. A major issue is the true value of use of “naturals” in topically applied formulations.

Module 1:
  • Agricultural aspects- location, season, treatment
    – Plant extracts
    – Plant derived oils
  • Implications of processing on natural extracts
  • The holistic approach of inclusion of a whole extract vs. the
purification approach of isolating an active ingredients

Module 2:
  • Processing on natural oils
    – Definitions
    – Implications on composition
    – Stability
    – Efficacy
  • Chemical markers in plant derived compounds

Module 3:
  • Effective concentrations of natural ingredients: in vitro and
    in vivo testing
  • Formulations aspects: pH, incompatibilities, chemical and
    physical stability
  • Skin absorption and metabolism of natural ingredients
  • Safety assessment

Question and Answer Session

Organized by: The Center for Professional Advancement
Invited Speakers: Dr. Nava Dayan, Skin Care Research Expert

Dr. Nava Dayan earned her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem specializing in skin delivery. She is currently the R&D Director at Lipo Chemicals Inc. and an Associate Adjunct Professor in the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University. During her 20 years of experience she has specialized in a variety of areas related to skin treatment including:
  • The research and understanding of the interaction between topically applied compounds and the skin.
  • Findings in skin biochemistry and especially the upper layer of the skin- the stratum corneum
  • Delivery of active compounds into and through the skin and the development of delivery systems to facilitate transport, improve bio-availability and reduce toxicity
  • Design and development of topically applied formulations
  • Design of clinical studies to substantiate market claims and to assure safety
  • Academic teaching and lecturing
  • Industrial experience in both development of active compounds, delivery systems and finished formulations
  • Skin absorption studies in vivo and in vitro for safety/ efficacy assessment
  • In vitro methodologies for safety assessment of topically applied compounds
Dr. Dayan has received numerous awards of excellence for various papers she has authored. She is the author and coauthor of more then 80 publications. Dr. Dayan is a member of the Dermatopharmaceutics Focus Group, and the Abstract Review Committee for the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), and the Consumer Products Group of the International Controlled Release Society (CRS). She is also a member of the US Society of Cosmetic Chemists, and the chair of the Annual Cosmeceuticals Summit Symposium. Dr. Dayan teaches at Rutgers University and is the Director of several courses at the Center for Professional Advancement.
