At a time when globalization of pharmaceutical development is moving extremely quickly, it is important to create an opportunity to consider what direction should be taken in Japan and Asia and where we should look to the future through the clarifi cation of Japan’s role and contribution in global development. As keynote speakers, Dr. Fumimaro Takaku, President of Jichi Medical University, and Dr. Yasuo Ikeda, Professor, Life Science and Medical Bioscience, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University, both leading Japanese medical authorities, will present on “how to nurture and develop products of Japanese origin” and “Japan’s Capability in Global Development” respectively.

In addition, Dr. Murray Lumpkin, FDA Deputy Commissioner for International and Special Programs, Dr. Thomas Lönngren, Executive Director of the European Medicines Agency, and Dr. Tatsuya Kondo, Executive Director of the PMDA will have a discussion chaired by Professor Tatsuo Kurokawa, former Council of the Ministry of Health Labor and Welfare on “Expectations for Asia and Japan’s Role.” Another session is planned to discuss wide-ranging topics among those working in regulatory authorities and within pharmaceutical development in industry.
