Obesity: Peripheral and Central Pathways Regulating Energy Homeostasis

Obesity occurs when energy intake exceeds energy output. In the past four decades obesity has emerged as a significant medical problem, initially in the West but increasingly in developing countries as well. Obesity plays a major role in the development of illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Successful treatment of obesity would lead to significant decreased risk for these illnesses. In the case of type 2 diabetes, weight loss can lead to complete resolution in many patients, while in others it results in marked improvements in glucose control. While there is increased understanding of the physiologic and molecular pathways that lead to a state of energy balance that favors obesity, much remains to be discovered. Furthermore, development of successful pharmacologic therapy remains elusive. In the past few years, a focus on interactions between fat and the central nervous system has provided important insights in the area. The role of nutrient sensing in modulating energy balance has also become an important topic for investigation and, recently, the gut has emerged as another key organ in energy homeostasis. The goal of this meeting is to bring together researchers involved in understanding organ-specific aspects of the molecular and physiologic pathways regulating energy homeostasis, with the aim of developing a systematic approach for integrating and regulating these pathways.
