The 24th Annual Education Conference of the National Society of Genetic Counselors will provide current information about a wide range of topics pertinent to the field of genetic counseling. Plenary and concurrent sessions will allow both didactic and smaller group formats for counselors to explore and discuss emerging issues and trends, ethical issues and research results. Genetic counselors, researchers and health care providers will present scientific data regarding recent advances in both genetic technology and knowledge of genetic conditions. Other sessions will explore counseling issues, counseling theories and skills that will improve the practice of genetic counseling. The conference will address all areas of traditional and non-traditional genetic counseling, such as prenatal, pediatric, adult, cancer, laboratory, industry, public health and research.
After attending this conference, participants will be able to:
• Describe recent developments in medical genetics, including diagnosis, disease management and therapeutic options.
• Understand and incorporate new technologies, genetic testing and research results into the clinical setting and in genetic counseling practice.
• Understand and apply counseling theories and techniques in working with clients.
• Identify emerging areas of social, legal and ethical conflicts.
• Explore the changing role of the genetic counselor in light of new scientific advances.
