Metabolic profiling, or the analysis of all cellular metabolites, provides a powerful new tool for gaining insight into functional biology. Providing a snapshot of the level of numerous small molecules within a cell or a biofluid and how those levels change under different physiological, pharmacological and toxicological conditions, it is complementary to gene expression and proteomic studies. Currently earmarked by the NIH roadmap initiative as an important area
for development, metabolic profiling is actively being applied to studies of drug toxicity, drug efficacy and model organisms, as well as humans and plants. Metabolic profiling and metabolic signatures are now being applied in drug discovery and drug development efforts. This conference will explore developments in tools for acquisition of metabolic profiling data, computational approaches for analysis and modeling based on such data, as well as practical applications of metabolic profiling. In addition, a one day conference following the Metabolic Profiling meeting will explore the problems and challenges associated with the various analytical methodologies applied to metabolic profiling and discuss ways to overcome these challenges in order to enhance the information returned. Researchers active in any of these areas should consider submitting proposals for oral or poster presentations, and make plans to attend the meeting.
