Parasitic diseases in Brazil: the birth of a nosography (1880-1935)

  January 07, 2005

Institut Pasteur, Paris
2005-02-03/2005-02-05

The birth and the definition of the notion of parasitic diseases in Brazil constitutes the major theme of this colloquium. The period considered extends from 1880 (first studies on the transmission of yellow fever and discovery of the agent of malaria) to 1935 (when the nosography of Chagas’ disease had firmly been established). The methodology used to define the nosography and the etiology of parasitic diseases (particularly Chagas’ disease and Brazilian leishmaniosis) cannot be undertsood without the study of the strategies set up to control them, the study of the role played by research and public health institutions and the making up of the medical brazilian identity. Different topics will be thus discussed in this workshop, such as :
•theories about the origin of tropical diseases before the discovery of parasites
•first surveys on the transmission of diseases and the notion of vector
•Brazil as an elaboration place for the nosography of two parasitic diseases : Chagas disease and american leishmaniosis
•Role and relationships between the different actors of research and prevention
