Penetrating the PPO Market: Strategies and Opportunities

  September 16, 2004

Strategic Research Institute, Westin Embassy Row Hotel, Washington DC
Nov 15-16, 2004

According to the American Association of PPOs, approximately 112 million Americans are enrolled in Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs). PPO enrollment is growing faster than HMO which reflects the popularity of a model that offers wide choice of physicians at a reasonable cost. In a survey of 3,000 employers in 2003, Mercer Human Resource Consulting documented an enrollment gain to 51% PPO vs enrollment drop to 30% HMO.

Disease management is becoming important strategically in the highly competitive PPO environment. In response to consumer choice and with recent increases in employee enrollment in PPO's health plans are looking for quality-driven, cost-effective disease management programs to market to their members, especially to high-risk individuals. The PPO expansion, promoted by consumerism, opens a wide door to disease management.

This two day event, with approximately 25 speakers, will address the opportunities for disease management in PPOs; how disease management in PPOs can lower the cost of health care; and how consumerism is fueling PPO growth. We will also explore the concerns of the self-insured employer market and Third Party Administrators, accrediting disease management in PPOs; implementing disease management in a PPO; case studies and specialty health care disease management in PPOs. Last our Chair will demonstrate in a post-conference workshop how to design a disease management program around a PPO structure.
