International Summit on Innovations in Critical Care and Hospital Flow | ||||||||||||||||
February 27, 2003 | ||||||||||||||||
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Studios, Orlando FL 2003-04-02 - 2003-04-04 Among the many challenges facing hospitals today, two of the most important are: how to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Intensive Care Units, and how to improve patient "flow" throughout the hospital. These two issues are inexorably linked. Intensive care is one of the most expensive and complex components of health care. It requires precision, synchronization, and coordination of multiple services and personnel. As a result, the greatest leverage for improvement in the ICU lies in redesign of practice settings as a whole - systemic improvements that require better teamwork and an unwavering commitment to meeting the real needs of patients and families. None of this can happen effectively without the timely flow of patients and information throughout the hospital to ensure that the right patient is in the right place with the right provider and the right information at the right time. Acute care settings are plagued with waits, delays, and diversions because hospital units are not designed to achieve optimal flow of people, information, and materials. This problem has a significant impact on the overall performance of the hospital, but it is most severe in critical care settings. Together, these two issues represent perhaps the most significant opportunity for hospitals to reduce costs, increase patient satisfaction, enhance patient safety, and improve clinical outcomes. Recognizing the strategic value of integrating these two synergistic areas, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement is pleased to present the International Summit on Critical Care and Hospital Flow. This event will feature two "Tracks," one on innovations for the ICU and the other on improving Flow in the hospital. You can choose to spend your time focused specifically on the ICU, or you can learn about Flow and how it impacts critical care and all other acute care areas. Or you can split your time and learn about both. |
